I had the opportunity to A/B this compressor plug against many others and found this to be the best in terms of overall apparent loudness and forwardness in the mix. I set all of the compressors to operate to the same peak level, this was the one that stood out as being the best sounding within the parameters I had setup on this vocal track. Gets a 4 out of 5 only because I wish the display was a touch larger. The price is unbeatable for what you get with this plug-in, though. Amazing job UA!!!!!
LA-3A its really a great piece of gear. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and from my point of view that is what great means and above that it is very easy to use. It's in all of my productions. Is true I did not made a comparison test with the LA-3A hardware because I don't own one, but I really don't think that is so important after all. Great job guys!

This is a great workhorse compressor that you can use on anything.
Although everyone talks about bass and drums, (Big giveaway) I'm partial to using them on rappers vocals....
I fell in love with the LA2A and am so stoked to have the LA3A in the tool box now.
They are both part of my "go to" team of compression. So simple, yet so radically effective, beautiful with unspoling character.
If you love the LA2A, then you need this one too. Before anything else.

I really like this plugin. Works really nicely on vocals. Dropped it on a vocal track and it smoothed out the vocals and helped the track sit nicely in the mic. Love this plugin.
Needed the easyest compressor for my bass and more, my choice was the LA3A.

The hardware LA-3 is my goto guitar tracking comp, and the software version does not disappoint!!! Excellent response and excellent quality. It goes on every guitar track I cut and then I freeze away. Guitars and snares grow in size and really stay put in the mix. A CLASSIC! Buy it now.
I was very excited to see that UA finally released the LA-3A for the UAD-1 when I puchased my first card. I had used the original hardware version and always wanted to own a few. I immediately purchased the UAD-1 version and was thrilled to find it dead on to the hardware and of course, plug-in quiet! It has that amazing transparency, smoothness, and adds a depth that you just don't find in other comps. It is the pinnacle of the Opto sound!
sound's a bit like LA-2A, but with faster attack (read "for vocals") and with bright middle range excitement.
good option for LA-2A users!
Having the UAD-1 since 2001 I know all the plug-ins pretty well, and I couldn´t live without them...
On first sight, I thought the LA3A is not much different than the LA2A - but then came the day I used it on Vocals and... WOW - this is for me THE best darn thing for compressing Vocals!
I use this every time to make a 'good' DI bass into an amazing bass sound. Easy to use compression, simply set how much of the peaks you want to remove then increase the gain to make up for the reduced output.
Such a simple plugin for such huge results. i love cranking these up and putting them in series!
This is nice, but when side by side to the la2a it's not as character filled - I guess it's a subtle difference that's lost on me, but still has it's uses for elements that you don't want smothered.
The LA-3A is a perfect complement to the LA-2A. Each has it's own unique character in sound. Along with the 1176, I find I can choose one of them for many applications to enhance a track.
Surely it misses what MKII versions now can do, making the sound creamier, but just for compression you got the job done fast with simple operation; you learn quickly how to work with it and it's low DSP usage make you use it a lot across your projects..
I will go to this compressor if I really need to dig into something to obtain substantial and uncolored signal management. Since it's attack and release times are non-adjustable it's either going to work really well or it's not depending upon the tempo of the program material unless you pair it with another compressor like the 1176 to catch the super fast transients if needed. It's pro's are it's simplicity to setup and it's tidy throughput. You can get massive signal management out of the LA-3A with very little setup. It's release time is substantially faster than the LA-2A which makes this unit more flexible in my opinion. A youthful LA-2A... clean, tidy and agile.
It's an very good Plug-in! The Best Version of a Plug-In that is truly accurate of the Hardware. I will use this Plug-In a lot. The Natural sound that the LA-3A brings to the mix is well worth the money.
About as simple as you can get to use. Results are spot on, even when pushed to its limits!
I'm using it quite a bit to provide some subgroup "glue", so easy to use and the results are sublime.
I've been getting great results using it before an LA-2A on snare drum to really make the tone cut through with a natural tone. It tends to be some what aggressive which I like.
It's a great compliment to the LA-2A and 1176.
It also sounds great on guitar. Changes the tone a little bit. sometimes it works and sometimes not, depending on the track. A great tool that does a great job on some sounds. It has a unique vibe that has been getting used on every mix since I got it.
