Commercial music studio loves Apollo 16

    by J. Roll . 5 out of 5 stars

This unit does everything I want. I was not interested in the preamps as I have a 30 channel Trident console from the 1980's and several other preamps. I wanted decent conversion, rock solid stability, UAD plugins in the mix, and occasionally in the monitor / cue mix. I was concerned about latency as I have always had a pre-converter no latency headphone system and I can say this sounds the same, no noticeable delay in the tracking phones. I'm now able to put some cool UA reverbs in the cans when needed, or track through the UA Studer plugs if I want to print saturation. Finally the inserts and flexible outputs are feeding my Hear Technologies system well so I can taylor the monitor options for the artist. Great box, makes working fun!

074 51 10 Young: Hello, Houston. Sweet 16 has arrived.

    by G. Clasen . 5 out of 5 stars

Apollo 16 is linked up to a rackmount custom pc, via FireWire from Apollo to thunderbolt on pc using a cable adapter. Mine sits in a limited space rack with a modded velcro'd computer case fan on the back powered by 5.5 volt USB cord creating just enough quiet airflow . Units running at a safe 98 deg.

Overall the more I use this the more I like it!

Nice converters & using plugins on the front side this makes my currant gear sound better than ever with no headroom limitations!
Syncs up to different sample rated projects smoothly! Plays files from browsers or other programs while my DAW is open. no need to close the session just to preview a file!
VST instruments threw virtual buses work great with extra buffering unchecked in settings

Nice unit, bad quality control, bad customer service.

    by J. Hiltz . 3 out of 5 stars

I bought my Apollo 16 after several months of research.

When it arrived, it had a small gouge on the faceplate. I emailed UA and a few days later was told it was IMPOSSIBLE for the Apollo to leave the factory damaged, and it was clearly a shipping issue. The unit was sealed and well packaged, and appeared to be unopened. It was obvious it came damaged from the factory. I wasnt asking for anything when I wrote, but a little plugin gift card or something would have gone a long way after shelling out $3100 for a not quite new unit, plus the hundreds of dollars I spent on plugs within days of purchasing.

Aside from this, the Apollo 16 is a fantastic unit, with great conversion, and the plugs are the best I have ever used.

    The Apollo 16

    by T. Siegel . 4 out of 5 stars

    The Good:
    - Fantastic A/D conversion quality - on par with systems costing several thousands more
    - Low Latency plugin tracking is pure heaven - another feature that would cost thousands
    - Very intuitive and simple hardware controls lay out and digital console
    - Extremely flexible i/o routing
    - Great UAD customer service

The Bad (Why 4 stars instead of 5)
In my mind if you make the investment on the Apollo 16 you should be content with you processing DSP power for at least a couple years there should be nothing you can throw at it that it can't handle. But if I ran a session at 96/24 I could barely get through a mixdown using UAD plugs. Plus the plugins are just too expensive. They could include a few more plugins.

Decent Product, awful quality control and worse service.

    by J. Hiltz . 1 out of 5 stars

I bought the 16 last year soon after it was released, and I spent around 1400 bucks on plugins. The Apollo had been damaged in the factory and it arrived sealed, yet there was a gouge in the faceplate. They blamed shipping but the box was in perfect shape. They gave me a little voucher for plugins that I used but I was still pretty upset that I bought a new $3200+ that is damaged.

Then they put on a promotion that lets new users of the Apollo get a FREE thunderbolt card. I had been thinking about getting one but the price doesnt make sense. Its supposed to be a TB interface, but you have to spend $500 to get full use out of it. UA wont be getting another cent out of me until I get a TB card. If I could do it again I'd go Apogee.

    Jack Perkins

    by M. Goldstein . 4 out of 5 stars

Well, I'm looking forward to a digital only version which connects to any kind of converters I buy elsewhere. It's too cheap and all in one.

Widen Mixes - I am satisfied

    by L. Harris . 4 out of 5 stars

When my very own Apollo 16 arrived and I connected my previous stems mixes of (4) stereo stem to a total of (8) stereo stems, my mixes literally gave me that satisfaction I yearned for. I really heard the depth, rounded bass, space, etc that I hear so many talk about. Not to mention the LA 610 plugins, it adds extra stuff to my mixes that only a true plugin by UA can give. This unit is well assembled and fits perfectly as a 1 space in my rack. It's hard going to bed on time because I'm up trying so many things. My feeling of creating music again has returned. Thank you UA. I can't wait to share my project with the UA family.

    Apollo 16

    by S. V. Gerard . 5 out of 5 stars

My historic set up had a very productive workflow and great sound. Both of these have improved with the purchase of the Apollo 16.

My Bette Jane Studio (www.bettejanestudio.com) in Calgary utilizes a Toft ATB 16 analog board along with a 610 Solo and several other custom preamps. The Apollo 16's no pre-amp approach was perfect for how I want to shape sound on the input side of things. I had been using the UAD Satellite Quad prior to Apollo 16, so the plug ins became much faster and easier to use with the Apollo Thunderbolt card. The sound of these plug ins is exciting.

The Console application is perfect in my workflow, giving me the opportunity to set up rich cue mixes for recording sessions using the plug ins in monitor mode.

    apollo 16 / plugs / octo custom

    by S. Joly . 4 out of 5 stars

    - got some errors -50 disabling the plugs initiated in a protools 10.3.2 session
    - got a real problem to authorize my octo custom; my son first authorized my UAD card on his account. We asked for a transfer of property, which has been done and confirmed. But when I re-authorized the card ON MY ACCOUNT, my son received the congratulation mail. That's a pity, cause when I authorized the octo, I also bought 3 plugs from the custom voucher, which are now authorized for my son. You must have received a mail from JUKE-BOX about this problem. I really hope this will be fixed very soon, as I am running the demos and I have only got 10 days.
    - Otherwise, the sound is fantastic

    Excellent System

    by M. Ohman . 5 out of 5 stars

We switched to the Apollo from another well know and expensive brand of converters - the Apollo is better in every respect. Better sounding, better metering, and fantastic integration with the new Mac Pro.
The system has worked flawlessly from day one. Thanks!

    Amazing

    by M. Alexander . 4 out of 5 stars

The Apollo 16 is absolutely amazing! The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is because it would be nice to be able to link different systems together such as an Apollo with and Apollo 16. Work that capability in and it would be of of this world!
