    Great compressor

    by M. Marantz . 4 out of 5 stars

I'm really glad UA included this compressor in my Apollo Quad bundle. It's fantastic, and easy to use since it's based on the simple but effecting 1176 design. Thanks for a great product! I will say it's not quite as good as the newly released revisions UA has made more recently, but that's to be expected since the revisions are newer technology. I still really dig this compressor and it sounds great.

I'm a keyboard player / producer. Grammy nomination with the Pussycat Dolls, production with Beyonce Touring with Lauryn Hill & Bobby Womack & a engineering credit for recording vocals for Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone.
We've recorded @ 4rth street recording in Santa Monica with Sly and used a real 1176 on some of the tracks. Wow. I was so impressed that when I started using the universal audio 1176 on vocals and even Drum busses. It's not abrasive and give the signal a warm sound. Even as a plug-in it is comparable to the real thing. I like it.

I love it on a variety of signals: vocals, bass, guitars, percussion, drums… It's really my go-to colouring compressor. Recently working with Softube's FET compressor which has a parallel compression (mix) knob I wish the UAD compressors had that too, as I love parallel compression and setting up the sidechain is not my preferred type of work. ;-)

I like it on drums. It took me a while to discover, but it works well, better than the Fairchild. Its also very useful on guitars and bass, becourse if you use it with a "mild" setting, it do not sound compresed.

good compression on drums and bass, for this simulation do not seek any compensation for other developers plugins.

It's a good sounding comp, I like to use it on groups, and on percussive sounds.
The only thing i miss (I know it's not part of the original) is the wet dry option, cause i like to use FET comps in paralel mode. (like suftube FET comp)

    One word: A workhorse.

The only drawback compared to the real thing is you have to push it harder to get the same results, otherwise it has the same impression of colour to the audio that passes through.

Even if it's a pussycat compared to my very aggressive Purple MC77, the UA 1176LN can still do some great work on a snare drum. I just think that it's about time for an update, because things have changed a lot for UA since the Studer A800 and FATSO plugins. How about the "super coloured 1176" blueface?

Having compared it to Waves's CLA76 I think your plug sounds a bit warmer, although also a little less forward sounding. I haven't listened to the hardware but I generally prefer more in-your-face sounds, so these days I more often use the latter.

This came with the UAD-2 package and is a very useful and useable compressor. It gives a little more top end detail to the sound as well bringing sources more to the foreground of your mixes. I find it particularly good on vocals and pop acoustic guitars.

Très bon compresseur possédant un temps 'attaque relativement court.
    Indispensable sur un mix !

There is one really good term that could actually describe what this compressor does. ATTITUDE!! Inserting this on a track is like writing a big F***Y** between the speakers. Snare drums get an unholy snap and vocals get that jump-out-of-the-speakers-and-chase-you-around-the-room sound. Of course it's also great for the little things, but if you need to turn something boring into something fun.. this is THE piece of gear!
